Not sure which U-shaped magnet series is right for you? Use this quick selection guide based on your key requirements.
Five main factors should be considered when selecting U-shaped magnets. If you are still uncertain after reviewing the guide, send your application scenario and requirements directly to Fullzen’s sales engineers. We will provide professional selection recommendations within 12 hours.
1. Select by pull force requirement
Pull force is the most intuitive indicator for product selection. Choose the small series for light-duty holding under 10kg, the heavy-duty series for industrial applications ranging from 10kg to 80kg, and the large series for heavy lifting above 80kg. Note: The stated pull force is measured under ideal contact conditions. In real applications, air gaps, flatness of contact surfaces and material of the workpiece will affect the actual holding force. It is recommended to reserve a safety margin of 50–70% of the nominal value.
2. Select by mounting space
Confirm the available installation dimensions first, then pick the largest possible model within the space limit (larger volume equals stronger pull force). The pull force of U-shaped magnets mainly depends on magnet volume and pole area; a larger pole area delivers stronger attraction. If mounting space is limited but higher pull force is needed, consider upgrading the magnet grade (for example from N35 to N52) or adopting a steel housing magnetic concentration structure.
3. Select by operating temperature
NdFeB magnets have operating temperature limits. Exceeding the maximum temperature will cause irreversible demagnetization. Standard N grades (N35–N52) work up to 80°C, SH grade up to 150°C, UH grade up to 180°C and EH grade up to 200°C. If your application runs at elevated temperatures, make sure to select products with the corresponding high-temperature grade. Fullzen can provide high-temperature aging test verification.
4. Select by environment and coating requirements
Ni-Cu-Ni triple nickel coating works well for dry indoor environments. Epoxy coating offers better corrosion resistance for humid or outdoor conditions. Parylene coating or gold plating is recommended for medical and food equipment. Zinc plating or tin plating is suitable for scenarios requiring welding or electrical conductivity. NdFeB material is prone to oxidation and rust, so proper coating selection is critical to service life.
5. Select by precision requirement
Sensors and precision instruments demand tight dimensional tolerances and consistent magnetic performance. Our precision small series is recommended (±0.03mm tolerance, ±3% flux consistency). Standard tolerance (±0.1mm) is sufficient for regular industrial fixtures and lifting applications with better cost performance. Contact Fullzen for customization if higher precision is required.
The U-shaped configuration concentrates magnetic flux between the two poles — creating a focused, high-density magnetic field that delivers far more effective holding force than equivalent bar or block magnets.
U-shaped magnets are widely used in industrial adsorption, positioning and sensing applications mainly due to their unique magnetic circuit structure. Understanding this principle helps you judge whether U-shaped magnets fit your application and how to optimize dimension design.
Three major magnetic advantages of the U-shaped structure
• Concentrated magnetic field: The north and south poles are on the same end face. The magnetic field at the opening is highly focused, delivering 2 to 3 times the effective pull force of bar magnets with the same volume.
• Directional attraction: The magnetic field is clearly oriented and concentrated, suitable for applications requiring precise positioning and directional adsorption, such as fixtures, sensors and magnetic switches.
• Self-shielding effect: The magnetic field on the back of the U-shape is weak, reducing magnetic interference with surrounding electronic components. It outperforms bar magnets in precision equipment.
Fullzen’s engineering team offers FEM magnetic circuit simulation services. We optimize the opening ratio, pole spacing and dimension proportion of U-shaped magnets according to your application, to achieve maximum pull force within a limited volume. Many customers have optimized their dimension ratios with our recommendations and achieved over 30% higher pull force at the same material cost.

Common questions about U-shaped magnets — covering selection, magnetic strength, materials, customization and ordering.
U-shaped magnets feature a flat bottom and parallel sides, designed for industrial mounting and flat-surface adsorption, widely used in industrial fixtures and automation equipment. Horseshoe magnets have a curved bottom, the classic shape for teaching and pick-up tools. They share the same working principle: both adopt a U-shaped magnetic circuit with two poles oriented on the same side for concentrated magnetic flux. Fullzen manufactures both types of NdFeB magnets, with a separate product line for horseshoe magnets.
With the same volume and material, the effective pull force of a U-shaped magnet is typically 2–3 times that of a bar magnet. The U-shape concentrates the north and south poles on one side, creating a highly focused magnetic field at the opening. By contrast, bar magnets have poles at opposite ends with relatively dispersed magnetic flux. The exact multiplier depends on the opening ratio and pole spacing of the U magnet: narrower openings and smaller pole gaps deliver greater pull force gains.
Four key factors to select a proper U-shaped magnet:
Required pull force: reserve a safety margin of 50–70% of the rated value, since air gaps and uneven contact surfaces reduce effective pull force in real applications.
Mounting space: choose the largest possible model that fits within your available space.
Operating temperature: pick SH/UH/EH grades for high-temperature environments.
Environmental conditions: use epoxy or Parylene coating for humid or corrosive settings. If you are unsure, contact our Fullzen sales engineers for professional selection recommendations.
Our most powerful U-shaped magnet is model FZ-UL200150 in the large series (200×150×30 mm, N45 grade), with a maximum tested pull force of approximately 220 kg. If higher pull force is needed, custom oversized magnets or steel shell magnetic concentrating structures are available. The steel shell design can boost pull force by an additional 30–50% at the same magnet volume. Please contact Fullzen’s engineering team for evaluation.
Yes, but you must select suitable high-temperature grades. Standard N grades (N35–N52) have a maximum working temperature of 80°C; SH grade up to 150°C; UH grade up to 180°C; EH grade up to 200°C. Exceeding the maximum operating temperature causes irreversible demagnetization. In addition, pull force at high temperatures will be lower than at room temperature, so extra margin should be reserved during selection. Fullzen can provide high-temperature aging tests and high-temperature pull force data.
Fullzen supplies multiple coating options for U-shaped magnets:
Ni-Cu-Ni triple nickel coating: most popular, nice appearance and moderate corrosion resistance
Black epoxy coating: excellent corrosion resistance, suitable for outdoor and humid environments
Zinc plating: cost-effective for general industrial use
Parylene coating: ultra-thin, uniform, biocompatible, for medical and high-end electronics
Gold plating: great conductivity and premium finish, for high-end electronics and connectors
Custom coatings are available upon request.
We offer low MOQ for standard models: 100 pcs for high-power series, 10 pcs for large series, 100–500 pcs for small-size series, and 200 pcs for horseshoe series. MOQ for custom magnets depends on process complexity, generally ranging from 500 to 5000 pcs. For customers in the R&D phase, Fullzen provides flexible small-batch sampling solutions to validate designs at minimal cost.
Yes. Fullzen highly recommends sample confirmation before mass production. Samples of standard items are free, while the customer covers shipping freight. Custom samples incur a small tooling/sample fee, which can be deducted from mass order payment. Each sample comes with an inspection report covering dimensions, magnetic performance, coating thickness and other critical parameters. Mass production starts only after sample approval to align expectations on both sides.
In-stock standard models ship within 3–5 days. Non-stock standard items take 15–20 days for production. For custom products: 7–10 days for sampling, and 20–30 days for mass production (counted from drawing confirmation and deposit receipt). Fullzen maintains flexible production scheduling. Rush orders are available, with mass delivery as fast as 10 days.
